My previous work incarnation was as a Cytologist for 25 years diagnosing Cancer. Because of my history,I have many clients who are living through treatment for cancer. In that frame work I offer the following information.
We deal with radiation issues when dealing with patients undergoing radiation treatment for cancer, but also working in hospitals using radiation as treatment. Living here in New Mexico, we are surrounded by laboratories working with radioactive materials. Although not like a plant meltdown, we do have health concerns right here in "river city". When I still worked full time in the Western Medical world, my department used to hold education seminars on these issues on a regular basis.
I know that the thought of this radiation getting to us can be an overwhelming thought, but it is surprising how much our clothing and the walls of our homes protect us from radiation. After all, we are some distance from the site itself. That said with the fear in people's hearts, perhaps just breathing and realizing there is much we can do will help.
I realize some are concerned about the Iodide cloud, and thinking of taking iodine is good. Lugol's Solution at 2% taking one to two drops a day in a glass of water is probably the best... correct amount, easily utilized by the body and the thyroid gland uptake is efficient, it is a solution of potassium iodine. With the Iodide cloud falling we cannot rely on kelp from the sea protecting us, nor should we be looking at dairy and meat as food sources, the cloud falls and it is taken up by the vegetation which is ingested by the fish and animals and we take the radioactive iodine in that way. Knowing where your food comes from is important. For me, thinking of the plant in Japan.....
Our greatest concern might well be the cesium 137 that will be released if the spent fuel rods are vaporized or the core melts. Cesium is a cloride, a naturally ocurring salt. In the body it acts in much the same way that potassium does in the (NaK) sodium potassium pump gates of all of our cells. We want to fill those gates with potassium cloride (KCl), some potassium citrate and some potassium aspartate. That way the cesium has no hold on the body. Potassium is good to take in food sources rather than pill form or artificial means because over indulgence of this substances has health issues of it's own.
We might want to be thinking of foods like:
Swiss chard, boiled Romaine lettuce Crimini mushrooms, raw Spinach, boiled Celery, raw Basil, dried, ground Mustard greens, boiled Fennel, raw, sliced Broccoli, steamed Winter squash, baked, cubes Cucumbers, slices, with peel Blackstrap molasses Tomatos, ripe Turnip greens, cooked Collard greens, boiled Summer squash, cooked Eggplant, cooked Cantaloupe Green beans, boiled Kale, boiled Brussel sprouts, boiled Carrots, raw Turmeric, powder Beets, Boiled Asparagus, boiled Papaya Bell peppers, red, raw Cauliflower, boiled Apricots Ginger root Yam (Dioscorea species), cooked Strawberries Kiwifruit Chili pepper, dried Lima beans, cooked Cabbage, boiled Banana Grapefruit Onions, raw Oranges Potato, baked, with skin Avocado, slices Watermelon, diced Pinto beans, cooked Green peas, boiled Sweet potato, baked, with skin Lentils, cooked Kidney beans, cooked Figs, fresh Plums Prunes
Raspberries Split peas, cooked Soybeans, cooked Grapes
The blank spots in my table above are where I removed sea vegetables and meat sources of potassium.
May all beings be happy, May all beings be well, May all beings be free from suffering.

Hi Kirn, This is Lian Reed. I am wondering how an email I sent to a group of Ayurveda Students came to be on your blog? Thank you for giving me credit and I am not offended, just wondering how it got there?
